Your Kid Sister

Toy Piano
YKS: My dad gave me my toy piano for Christmas last year in a big box with a bow! I’ve never played real piano, but just like a kid, from play-ing the toy piano, I’m beginning to understand the real piano!
Rancid
YKS: Rancid was my favorite band for like… 5 years. More. Even when I didn’t listen to punk anymore, if somebody asked me my favorite band I said Rancid because I liked most of their albums, and that was more than I could say for most bands.
Aid
YKS: I hate asking people for help and the shitty thing is that when they DO help me, I usually don’t thank them very well because I feel so uncomfortable. This is why it’s often difficult for me to collaborate with other people in my music, I just get really bent out of shape and weird about it.
Punk rock tapes
YKS: My first car, a 1979 volvo station wagon, only had a tapedeck, so even before I got the car, my best friend prepared mix tapes of all our favorite punk bands: Rancid, The Distillers, Bad Religion, etc. so that even before I drove the car, we just sat in it listening to our tapes.
Kindergarten
YKS: I went to a crazy hippy kindergarten where all we did was play outside and paint and play with dolls made of corn husks with no faces.
DIY
YKS: I’ve been DIY since I was a kid. DIY haircuts, DIY clothing modification (when I was in 1st grade I was wearing jeans on a summer day and got a little warm in class, so I asked to go to the bathroom, took scissors, and cut off the pants of my jeans so they would become shorts).
Relationships
YKS: Are hard. You try living with your boyfriend, who’s also your drummer, who’s also recording your album, while maintaining a healthy a normal relationship. Impossible.
Trains
YKS: I love trains. They’re kind of rarely used in the United States so they make me really happy here in Europe. I would take trains every-where if I could. Because flying is bad for the environment and buses smell bad.
Underwear
YKS: For a long time I was searching for the perfect kind of underwear. I was never happy with the ones I had. Finally one day I found the perfect ones at a store in my hometown, so I bought like 20, in every color possible. Every time I visit my family, I go buy another 10 pairs just in case.
Poison
YKS: “Poison” is the first Rancid song I ever recorded and the reason is this: I was cooking with an ex-boyfriend of mine and we were listening to Rancid and I was singing along, but instead of screaming I was singing sweetly the harmonies, and we started to laugh because we were both conceptual artists who could see the irony in this. I decided I wanted to record the way that I sang the Rancid songs, and so I learned how to play the accordion by teaching myself those chords.
Catch Your Kid Sister together with Nina Nastasia in concert at Apolo 2 on the 7th of October.
