Inauguration
One Year Gracia Arts Project
There is beauty in the idea of sharing an art space with creative people from around the world who call Barcelona home: You get different viewpoints, angles, and theories united by the common experience of what it is to live in Barcelona these days. The immense growth of the Gracia Arts Project over the last year, jumping from zero to eighty members, demonstrates that there are plenty of guiri artists in this city searching for a platform from which to exhibit their work. To celebrate art and intercultural-ness, they’ve put together a one-year anniversary show with photographers from Spain, France, Italy, England, Finland, and Denmark, exhibiting their work under the header “Integración.” Watch out for Diana Bagnoli’s photographs. She’s our favorita.
Place: Gracia Arts Project @ Sant Honorat, 11
Time: 19:00h // Until August 2
Admission: Free

Concert
The Trashmen
Mix the surf-song melodies of the 1960’s and any Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello “Beach party” movie, and you’ve got the feel of The Trashmen. Seeking fame and fortune, like all bands, they hit the nail on the head with their first single “Surfin’ Bird”. After battling the British invasion, taking time out for family life, and weathering the death of one of the band’s founding members, the new lineup’s carrying on the surf/rock tradition that the band had at its start. Touring throughout Spain and France this summer, we’ll see if these guys still know how to rock after over 40 years in the business.
Place: Vallery @ Calabria, 85
Time: 21:30h
Admission: 18€ at the door // 15€ advance purchase
More info: sala-apolo.com

Music
Bad Religion
Is there anything more to say? Practising punk rock at its best, Bad Religion’s been around for nearly thirty years and still haven’t lost their path or spirit like some others. Welcome to the new dark ages. There are some people who say they’ve been playing the same song over and over again in different styles all these decades, but - bloody hell!- it’s a good one! So relax, enjoy watching the little kids go wild in front of the stage, and remember the time when it was you up front doing pogo and stage diving...
Place: Sala 1 @ Razzmatazz @ Almogàvers, 122
Time: 21:30h
Admission: 30€
More info: badreligion.com // www.salarazzmatazz.com

Thursday 19

Concert
The Unfinished Sympathy
Isn’t it nice when a bunch of boys actually know how to play their instruments? Based here in Barcelona, The Unfinished Sympathy mixes modern rock and upbeat melodies with the recently-revived sounds of emotional punk. After three successful albums and countless tours, los chicos have become one of the most popular Indie bands to ever have come out of Spain. Sponsored by Jägermeister, their next concert should bring out a crowd of those that like the sounds of bands like Jimmy Eat World and Joshua.
Place: Sidecar @ Plaça Reial, 7
Time: 22:30h
Admission: check website for details

Friday 20

Concert
Karina Erhard
Only those with the most powerful imagination can possibly conceive of being the world’s foremost flautist. Karina Erhard (German, living in Amsterdam) doth not need imagine it. She is living the dream! Pieces are written specifically for her. Here in BCN she’ll present two Jacques Bank pieces about a vagabond in Paris, something from the Catalan composer Carlos Silva, and also pieces by the father of minimal music, Steve Reich, and composer Jacob ter Veldhuis, who uses samples from Billy Holiday and the Jerry Springer Show. I’m sorry, what? As a "regalito especial" for her visit to Miscelänea, she’ll also debut "Three sketches," a musical meditation by Marco Beck. The flute pieces will be combined with texts and poems from Pablo Neruda, Carlos Silva y Lao Tse.
Place: Miscelänea @ Guardia, 10
Time: 21:30h
Admission: 5€
More info: www.miscelanea.info

Saturday 21

Art
Olafur Eliasson
It was in 2004 that I stood one day in the Tate’s Turbine Hall, watching people walk, sit, chat, think, and play, all bathed in the warm light of the giant sun of Eliasson’s installation, ‘The Weather Project.’ I’ve forgotten the first time I saw a Picasso, a Rothko, or a Warhol, but my first Eliasson I won’t. His constructions, simultaneously eccentric and highly geometric, use multicolored washes, focused projections of light, mirrors, and elements like water, stone, moss or mist to shift the viewer's perception of place and self. It’s straight-out fantastic. Luckily for us, he won the first Joan Miró prize last year and the foundation has made space for 50 of his works, from small to giant installations.
Time: 10:00h to 20:00h, Tuesdays to Sundays // Exhibition until September 28
Place: Fundació Joan Miró @ Avgda. Miramar, 71
Admission: 8€

Music
Día de la Musica
Apparently the 21st of June is the Día of music. Now you know. Thanks to Heineken’s money and somebody’s organization, we have free music (limited aforo, though) throughout the tarde and into the night. Granted, it’s not all the best music, but hey. Shit is free. Most of the groups bring happy, poppy vibes and there are some quality hip-hop beats for sure and some dance-around-on-a-sunny-summer-day-type tunes. If it’s nice out, roll through and chill. Maybe buy a popsicle. And lick it.
Place: Plaça l'Odissea (Mare Magnum)
Time: Charla @ 12h. First band @ 17h. Last band @ 22:30h.
Admission: Free // Aforo limitado

Music
Versus :: Lidia Damunt or Bpitch Control
Versus is Nitsa’s answer to Sonar and they are doing it correcto. They’re taking over Sala Apolo and Apolo[2] on this fine evening but you, my friend, have to choose (or pay two covers, rich boy). In Apolo numero uno, Lidia Damunt, currently considered one of the better Spanish artists of the year, with her (oh so hot right now!) grassroots pop rock. Then, downstairs in the [2], if you’re looking for sumpthin’ out of this world, sweat to Bpitch Control’s roster of djs including Ellen Allien’s spacial electro craziness. This is the music you should be listening to when you stand in line for Space Mountain at EuroDisneyLandWorld.

Sunday 22

Hang Out + Concert
Hamaka Festival :: Nature and culture happily united
Hamaka is in its fourth year now and back where they started: In the moat of the Montjuïc castle. Instead of a two-day festival with bands, food and hamakas, they’ve opted for four one-day events starting this Sunday (followed by 20th July, 17th August and closing on 21st September). The motto is still lo mismo: Organized by a non-profit organization, they aim to be an alternative propuesta, a juxtaposition to the Primaveras and Summercases of this city, a low key affair. It’s free, there’ll be lots of hammocks around, they’ve invited bands, and will put up a bicycle generator that shall produce the energy for the sound system.
Place: In the moat of the castillo on Montjuïc @ Montjuïc s/n
Time: 12:00h to 24:00h
Admission: Free

Wednesday 25

Film
Mister Lonely by Harmony Korine
It will be left to the critics 30 years from now to weigh in on whether Korine is a genius or just a misguided wackjob, but for now it is clear, at the very least, that the director of Gummo and the writer of Kids always serves up something visually interesting and different from the typical Hollywood fare. Refusing to cater to our shortening attention spans and tired fairytale-plot expectations, Korine’s latest starts with a Michael Jackson interpreter falling in love with a Marilyn Monroe impersonator in Paris. Maybe there is a little bit of a fairytale in there, albeit a fucked-up one, after all.
Place: Cine Maldà @ Carrer del Pi, 5
Time: 20:15h and 22:30h
Admission: 6€
More info: cinemalda.com

Thursday 26

Music + Debate
BCNmp7 :: Take-away Concerts
The CCCB addresses the effects of web 2.0, online social networking, etc. on the presence of live music in the urban atmosphere with a presentation of projects undertaken by sites such as the French Le Blogotheque or the English Black Cab Sessions. These organizations have gotten groups out of the studios and traditional venues by inviting them to play in urban locations in front of accidental audiences. In the CCCBizzle, they will explain their projects, show the latest recordings made in Barcelona and then todos can enjoy performances by Russian Red and Lonely Drifter Karen. Hot.
Place: CCCB
Time: 19:30h
Admission: 3.60€

El Robot Bajo del Agua
If you are in the mood to listen to some music that will help you relax and get out of your head for a while check out El Robot Bajo del Agua. Admission: 6€

Saturday 28

Music
Murder by Death + Dj Coco + Graham
Murder by Death may not sound like the most appealing band name to get you interested, but their music is definitely worth checking out. The U.S. four–piece band is doing a tour around Europe to promote their fourth album “Red of Tooth and Claw.“ Their music sounds of Italo Western, the big drama and darkness of Gothik Rock and a touch of sweaty Folk all transformed into sound by the dark and smooth voice of Adam Turla underlined by cello, keyboards and everchanging light and dark guitarplay. It‘s like the shadow of a paling moon in the heat of a sunny day’s noon. For fans of Nick Cave, Madrugada, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits.
Place: Sala 2 @ Apolo @ Nou de la Rambla, 111
Time: 00:30h (Begin)
Admission: 13€ (gratis socios Plastic Club y poseedores tarjeta-abono Primavera Sound 08)

Film
Xcèntric :: El Cinema Pensa L'Art
Today’s films in the Xcèntric series are a barreja of short quasi-home-movies made by and about such artists as Magritte, Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, Andy Warhol and Jonas Mekas. Stripped of the support of a crew, filming solo, these artists use a simplified cinematography to record and comment upon their creative processes in the intimate setting of family and friends.

Time: 18:30h
Admission: 3.60€
More info: www.cccb.org

Monday 30

Theatre
Festival Grec :: Rimuski
Roger Bernat’ and Ignasi Duarte’s play began as a workshop exploring, like much of their other work, the incorporation of non-actors into performances. In this case, it’s the taxi drivers of Barcelona who take the role of protagonists, telling their stories and creating an alternate guide to our streets and lives. The show has already seen a similar map drawn by taxistas in Cairo, Lisbon, Moscow, Rabat, and Vienna.
Place: Mercat de les Flors @ Lleida, 59
Time: 21:00h // 30.06-03.07
Admission: 20€
More info: mercatflors.org // barcelonafestival.com

Film
Sala Montjuïc :: La Vida de los Otros
The Sala Montjuïc isn’t Barna’s only open-air cine event but it’s undisputedly the city’s finest when it comes to location: above the noise of the city, a good 3 degrees colder than downtown, it’s a real delight to watch whatever flickers over the screen next to the Castillo. They open the season today with La Vida de Los Otros – good choice.
Place: Sala Montjuïc
Time: 22:15h // Jazz concert at 21:00h // 22:00h Shortfilm
